Busy packing today. I'm escaping the dreary weather, and heading south for a brief sojourn in the sunshine state. I'm taking the littlest sis, as the others can't miss school. It will be Rosie's first time on a plane. Excitement with a capital E. She's had a tough winter, and I think a little time in the sun might be the best medicine.

Rosie's worried the swimming pool might have a resident alligator. Let's hope that's not the case.

Picked up a basket of apple blossom shaded begonias at the store for a song. It's amazing the difference fresh flowers make in the house. Combined with a few open windows, due to unseasonably warm temperatures, and you can almost believe its Spring.

One late winter's day while I was still in college, I was slogging along the sidewalk and passed the florist's shop. Spring seemed a long way off, and I decided to go inside. With what little money I had, I purchased a tiny little pot of primroses. Upon returning to my apartment, there was a delivery man in the lobby holding a beautiful arrangement of flowers. Teasing him, I told him those were for me. He replied, 'Only if your name is Molly...' Would you believe my sister Katie sent me those flowers out of the blue?

Any plans for Spring break? I'd love to hear about it.

We awoke to Narnia this morning. A thick, heavy snow fell over night and blanketed everything in white. Everything's quiet. Not even one bird chirping.

Dramatic thunder and lightening accompanied the snowfall. The girls awoke hoping to hear the magic words... snow day. Instead, off they went to school.

While Rosie and I washed the slipcovers, and admired our new blue and white lamp. Is there anything better than freshly bleached slipcovers? I. Don't. Think. So.

Looking forward to the official first day of Spring, in just three short weeks.

counting your chickens

The acquisition of new linens required some serious re-arranging. Have you noticed the prevalence of chickens in various places as of late? I'm powerless to resist, but mine are of the inanimate variety.

Much easier to take care of, and a lot quieter.

I've a serious thing for vintage tablecloths. Something about the cheerful combination of color and pattern. Ironing them is a pleasure.

Cluckily, you can find them all over the place. Original ones and quality reproductions abound. Sunshine in cloth form.

What are you collecting these days? I'd love to find out.

The soft blue skies outside today could almost fool you into thinking Spring is on its way. If you didn't know better. The Mid-West has had many a snowstorm into March.

Rosie and I took a tour of the neighborhood, bundled up in our warm coats and mittens. We spotted quite a few trees starting to bud, and heard the chirps of a few hardy birds who forgot to fly South. By a few, I mean one or two. And of course, found lots of mud.

It won't be long. At least, that's what I keep telling myself. I'm looking forward to April showers bringing lots and lots of May flowers.

When I was in second grade, my parents were out of town for Valentine's day. Wanting to celebrate the holiday, I carefully wrapped candy sweethearts in fancy tissue paper and tied it with a pretty ribbon for everyone in the class. Twenty five times. Imagine my surprise the next day, when everyone untied their treat to reveal...

A quiet afternoon during a snowstorm, looking for something, anything, to do. I suddenly remembered an extra set of dolly dishes I had stored away for 'some day'. Out they came, and they needed a washin'. Guess who spent the next two hours wrist deep in bubbles?

Consider the valentine. A little card professing a 'sweet nothing' often accompanied by candy, a small gift, or flowers. Its sole purpose, putting a smile on someone's face. What's not to like?

The girls have been busy this week putting the finishing touches on their valentines. Their school is hosting its annual Valentine's Day dance this weekend. Special consideration must be given to the outfit, as the dress code specifies pink, red, or white attire only. Next, just 'the right' accessories, shoes, and hairstyle. But heaven forbid, a boy actually ask you to dance...

Even though, secretly, you're longing for it to happen.

Happy to have participated in Holly's Dotty Swap. I sent off a dotty box of chocolates, a polka dotted book bag, and Make, a book filled with lots of polka dotted projects from Cath Kidston.

Jennifer, my sweet partner from Sugar Pink Boutique, was thinking along the same lines. She kindly sent me some darling CK cupcake wrappers, colorful paper tape, and some ditsy polka dotted ribbon from her sweet shop.

When we bought our first house, it definitely fell into the category of a fixer-upper. One of the first things we did was remove the sixties mod mirrored wallpaper. Yes, I said mirrored. Psychedelic, is the word that comes to mind. The removal was not without a few hitches, as the previous owner had applied the crazy paper directly to the unpainted drywall with super glue (or so it seemed). Attempting to pull it off, resulted in an unbelievable mess. I wish someone had explained the importance of using a good wallpaper 'sizing'.

Well, I've learned a thing or two in the ensuing years. Wallpapering is definitely an artform. We put up quite a bit of it in previous homes, and certainly made our share of mistakes. Our current house doesn't have any, and I'm considering giving it another go...

Spotted this light blue wire bin languishing in the clearance aisle. Sporting a tattered metal label proclaiming it a 'dvd storage' bin. I made quick work of that with a pair of wire snippers. Much prettier filled with an assortment of stationery.

This weekend was a whirlwind. Spent all of Saturday with my in-laws, convincing my mother-in-law that the hospital was a better place to be... thankfully she listened. Her situation is improving daily. On Sunday, we had the pleasure of meeting a friend from afar, Maaike from Crejjtion. I picked up a few things for her, that I thought she might enjoy.

Originally from The Netherlands, she and her husband are spending a few years in Canada. A business trip to the States brought them to Chicago, luckily. Maaike is amazingly crafty and a beautiful photographer.

What a pleasure to meet them both. The girls really enjoyed speaking with them and hearing all about their interesting lives. Newlyweds, they were both so charming.

Maaike generously presented me with the most beautiful pair of handknit wrist warmers from a pattern of her own design. Rosie was happy to try them on holding the book of stickers she received...

It was such a treat to spend an afternoon in the city. We decided we need to do it more often.

I've a thing for vintage toleware. Whether it be lamps, trays or hooks, I like it.

Occasionally, it hasn't weathered the years well and needs a little work.

Such was the case with this vintage daisy rack I found recently, let's just call it 'rough and rusty'.

After a bubble bath, a good scrub, and lots of sanding...

I carefully primed and painted each petal.

Happy to see fresh daisies once again. Although some might prefer it chipped and shabby, I knew I wouldn't be happy having the girls hang their towels on something so rusty.

Have you tried Martha's new line of crafty paints?

I used her white enamel paint, and her 'peridot' metallic glitter paint on the leaves for dimension.

I'm pleased with the end result. Now, if they can only remember to hang up their towels...

Our postman, Dennis, looks too frail to deliver the mail. Extremely skinny, with stooped shoulders, thick glasses, scant grey hair, and a matching wispy moustache, he cheerfully walks his route carrying a ginormous mail bag in all kinds of weather. Occasionally, he knocks on my door to use the phone or the facilities. Never a word of complaint, he shares news of the neighborhood, his wife of forty-some years, and his many nieces and nephews.

I like him even better, when he delivers darling surprises in the mail...

Kim, of Musings from Kim K, was kind enough to send a sweet cherry teaset. Be still my heart, it's perfectly pint-sized and just the thing for dolly tea parties aplenty.

When Elyse, of Tinkered Treasures, heard that our Rosie was ill, she promptly dispatched one of her stellar 'Clothespin Doll Kits'. Cleverly packaged in polka dots, she included everything needed to create sweet clothespin dolls of your own design. Rosie loves every last bit of it, and hesitates to commit to cutting any ribbon for fear of 'using it all up'.

While Susan, a sweet blog reader, found a darling bluebird house music box adorned with posies. She kindly thought of us, and sent the sweet prize in the mail. Rosie, who longingly admired a music box that Gracie received from Grandma Sis, couldn't believe our good luck. She was thrilled to the tips of her toes.

On Sunday, Miss Frances Rose attended a party.

To celebrate her friend Katie's birthday, the girls were invited to her home for cake and party games. The invitation specified princess attire. Rosie was thrilled. During her long illness, she missed a number of her friend's parties. 'Not this one', she declared.

A few years ago, I gave away all of our assorted princess dress-up clothes to my nieces. In our dress-up box, we have lots of fairy, ladybug, assorted flowers, bumblebee, angels, mermaid, doctor, bridal and other finery remaining. No longer, any proper princess paraphernalia.

As part of their Spring line, Target had this pink tulle pouf dress. For far less than the cost of a princess dress at Disney, my friends. Check the clearance section for the silver sparkle maryjanes and the glittery tiara.

Miss Rosie, as you might've guessed, had a fabulous time at the party.

Perusing the aisles at Target, my eyes alighted on the Christmas clearance aisle. Marked down ninety percent, most of it was worth skipping. Until I spotted felt hearts, three in a pack, originally a dollar, now only ten cents. Exactly how, could I pass that up? Furthermore, whoever issued the edict that Valentine's day colors should be strictly limited to shades of pink? Not Martha, the proof is in her newest book, Handmade Holiday Crafts. Even on the cover, she's displaying her hearts in shades of red, orange, and maybe even 'tangerine tango', Pantone's color of the year...

Once home, feeling a little bit crafty, I pulled out some rick-rack and some red and white twine. Removing the gold loop included with the hearts, I simply attached the hearts evenly to the length of rick rack using the twine. Et voilà...

I'm wearing my hearts on my window, as opposed to my sleeve.

All she wanted was to be on the team. Try-outs were hard. She practiced and practiced the convoluted dance routine. Up way past her bedtime, she kept at it, till she could do the routine fifteen times without a single mistake.

At her Middle School, Poms is the team to make. Poms, or the Dance Team, had over forty girls trying out for only eighteen postions. Six from each grade of the school. Results posted on the door of the school for everyone to see.

Devastated, when she didn't make it.

The following year, she tried again. Practice, practice, and practice some more. Arms aching, concentrating on sharply executing every move. Willing to fail, but hoping not to...

So happy to say, she made the team.

Saturday, they placed second in a major competition. Only four points behind the first place school.

Congratulations, Miss Mary Kate.

With the Christmas tree retired to the curb for recycling, I gave the whole house a 'going-over'. Those little pine needles like to get everywhere, don't they? It involved moving most, if not all, of the furniture. Rearranging things, makes everything feel fresh.

I'm thinking I either want to re-paint this vintage French cabinet, or switch it out entirely.

Change is good. The problem is, it holds quite a bit, so I hesitate to get rid of it entirely.

Lots of vintage china posies and a quite a few favored gardening books. The drawers are filled with vintage china, mostly the 'Forget-me-not' Haviland set. It used to have a white interior filled with lots of white, back in my 'white' days. But I've realized, there is such a thing as too much white. At least, for me.

The soft colors and flowers speak to me of spring.

Soon, they seem to say. But not too soon, I hope.

With temperatures in the fifties, it's hard to believe it's January in the Mid-west. Where's the snow, my friends? This weekend, I'm looking forward to heading to the antique market with the girls and to the return of Downton Abbey. Part Two starts this Sunday on PBS. Did you catch Part One last year?

She turned her can'ts into cans, and her dreams into plans...

But first, she had to get out of bed.

I love the winter holidays, but I find them a little on the exhausting side. Maybe, it's a touch of the post-holiday blues. The only known cure, in my opinion? Getting busy, really busy.

The girls went back to school today, even Rosie. She's been out of school since October. She's still on the mend, but desperate to jump back into things. I miss her (and her sisters). My parents have flown the coop, for a three month sojourn in the sunshine. Lucky ducks. In one of my patented distraction maneuvers, I've decided to take everything out of the closet and give it a good 'going-through'. The last time I did this, I inadvertently gave a brand new pair of jeans (which I rarely buy for myself) to the charity thrift. Do you know what brand they were? 'Lucky', in my case, we'll call them 'Not-so Lucky'.

Looking forward is one of my favorite things to do. Fresh starts, clean notebooks, and new beginnings, what's not to like? We're staying in and greeting the new year quietly, with our traditional 'pizza making' from scratch plan. My in-laws, the parents of six children, started doing it years ago. It's a nice way to keep everyone in, happy and safe for the night.

the verdict on christmas

On Christmas Eve, we planned a festive dinner with the grandparents. The girls set a colorful table.

And were delighted when Santa paid us an unexpected visit.

The Christmas cards, were finally mailed to friends near and dear.

The only gift my youngest requested, a desk.

Imagine her delight Christmas morning, when she discovered Santa had left one by our back door.

(A little vintage desk/vanity found at a yard sale).

So pleased to say, that each of the girls was happy this year.

As they get older and the gifts get more expensive, it's hard to maintain a 'simple' perspective. But, this year... it worked. They each received one thing they really wanted, and them some small things they needed and/or could wear. They really had the most fun shopping for gifts for each other, wrapping them just right, and then enjoying the reaction received. Gracie in particular, loves Christmas. She had the most fun for weeks accumulating just the right thing, and making the most beautiful cards.

And, we had a wonderful Christmas dinner at my brother and sister-in-law's house with most of the cousins. We're eagerly anticipating the arrival of the rest from Williamsburg. Can't wait.

On Tuesday, we were able to take a quick trip down to the Christkindlmarket. Sort of an outdoor German pop-up village, in the heart of Chicago's Loop. The girls enjoyed the different festive shops featuring handblown glass ornaments, clever wooden toys, candle pyramids, cuckoo clocks, and all kinds of authentic German food.

We picked up a few ornaments. And let me tell you, that wasn't an easy task. Too many beautiful ones to choose from, we settled on a toadstool house, a sweet marguerite daisy, a polka dotted toadstool, a glittery strawberry, and a green pickle.

Are you familiar with the German tradition of the Christmas pickle? It seems to be something of an urban myth, as many people in Germany have never heard of it. The first child who finds the hidden pickle on the tree Christmas morning receives a special gift from St. Nicholas.

I've an idea. The first person that helps Mom clean everything up after Christmas receives a special gift. Think it will work?

The doorbell rang. There stood Rosie's teacher from last year, Mrs. Small. Holding a beautifully wrapped gift, peeking out of it, an adorable little mouse wearing a vintage-style santa suit.

Unwrapping the present, revealed the sweetest book ever, 'Santa Mouse Stories', by Michael Brown. A fortieth-anniversary re-print about a shy little mouse. She enclosed a handwritten note, explaining she'd heard Rosie wasn't feeling well and letting her know she missed seeing her in the hallways at school.

People have been so kind. Our little mouse is getting a little better each day. I'm so thankful everything is heading in the right direction. We're lucky. It easily could've gone the other way.

This Christmas, enjoy every minute with those you love. For you really never know, what tomorrow might bring.

Keeping busy is a full time job, my friends. With a four year-old on virtual house arrest (due to an extended illness), we've been up to our eyeballs in crafty, felty projects.

'Forget-me-nots' are probably one of my favorite flowers. Growing up, our back garden was a wonder. All kinds of things, blooming in happy profusion. Some reliably, some reluctantly. The patch of periwinkle blue, teeny-tiny, forget-me-nots never failed. Much like this felt version.

Cut your petals and slip stitch them together with several lengths of sturdy thread. Pull the thread, and when all of the petals are tightly gathered to your liking, knot it. Glue on your 'flower shaped' middle piece of felt. Add several seed beads of your choice. If you're using a barrette, bobby pin, ring back, or brooch fitting, attach a piece of green felt as a base for better adhesion. Finally, glue the completed flower to the fitting.

Assembling the flowers, she had the biggest smile on her face. Planning on bedecking everyone in flowers this Christmas, even our postman.

Out and about, I jingle as I go about my business. A few years ago, I spotted some jingle bell bracelets. As I'm a bracelet lover, I picked up a few. After Christmas, I went back and bought the rest on clearance, and did it again the following year. I've a little holiday suitcase filled with them.

Usually I wear two or three, accompanied by several charm bracelets in silver. If someone comments on the jingle bells, and genuinely seems to like them...

I give them one (or two).

I've given away more than I can count to friends, nieces, bank tellers, librarians, store clerks, teachers, nurses, dry cleaners and random ladies at the beauty shop.

Love seeing the smile at an unexpected gift.

It's beginning to look a little like Christmas.

One of the joys of pulling the Christmas things out of storage, reacquainting yourself with past projects. A white button wreath put together last year, happily sporting a red polka dotted bow. Thinking back to how much fun I had making it...

With Rosie sick, I'm a little behind in my usual holiday prep. Things aren't happening the way they usually do, and that's ok. At least, that's what I keep reminding myself. I'm concentrating on simplifying and focusing on what's really important this year. How about you?

What if I told you I was compelled to buy fifteen jars of miniature Bonne Maman Strawberry Preserves?

Visions of all the fun I could have with the empty jars filled my head. And, the girls love the preserves.

Which reminded me of a project my oldest daughter, Maggie, did to celebrate 'Mole Day'. Now, I know what you're thinking...

Exactly what is 'Mole Day'?

'Mole Day' is celebrated by chemists world-wide on October 23, from 6:02 a.m. to 6:02 p.m., commemorating Avogadro's Number (6.02 x 10 ^23), which is a basic measuring unit of chemistry.

For extra credit, Maggie was instructed by her teacher to sew an actual mole following a basic pattern that called for brown felt and thread. The catch was it had to play off the word 'mole'. Past examples have included a little mole wearing a Mexican sombrero and holding a little bowl of green 'guaca-'mole'.

Maggie carefully stitched up her own version, a little red gingham French mole. She presented him in a glass jar, labeled 'Bonne Mamole Moleberry Preserves'.

Worth five invaluable points of extra credit.

This Thanksgiving, we're staying home and keeping Rosie under quarantine. She's operating without much of an immune system. As sad as we are to miss the dinner at my sister's house, we're having fun putting together some ideas for a celebration of our own.

As I'm not such a fan of traditional 'harvest' colors, I decided to go with one of my long time favorites, chartreuse. Carnations are underrated, in my opinion. The simpler, the better.

Miss Sew & So was kind enough send along a parcel of magazines from the UK. We'd arranged a swap. Beautifully wrapped, she'd tied them with simple jute twine. I decided it was just the thing to re-purpose.

I can't tell you how much I appreciate all of your thoughtful comments of support in regards to Rosie. It means a lot to me. I'll leave you with a few words from St. Francis...

A quick run into another store, and I spotted the perfect gift for my mother-in-law.

I think she'll be pleased. In recent years, her mobility has decreased to the point where she's essentially bed-bound. As you can imagine, finding a perfect gift for her is like finding the proverbial 'needle in a haystack'.

I'll be sharing some of my gift-giving ideas, in the next few weeks. While carefully avoiding spilling 'any beans', if you know what I mean.

the little girl story

As I've mentioned before, preparing to move causes you to sort through all kinds of things. While helping my parents, I found a book given to me on the occasion of my Christening. It's signed and dated on the dedication page, '...the very first book for you very own library'.

It's a little worse for wear.

In fact, at some point I'd even signed the cover and apparently dropped it in the bath.

I could tell you the story without even reading the words. I remember it so well.

All about the pain of outgrowing the things you love, only to discover newer and better things down the road. Change is hard, my friends. Even when you're not so little.

I remember loving this book. So glad I can share it with my own little girls.

Which leads us to another charmingly retro discovery...

Little Miss Mod is taking her swanky pups out for a little walk. Not your typical juvenile theme, clearly someone was throwin' it down seventies style.

Thank you, too, for all of your kind words and prayers regarding our Rosie. She's been diagnosed with Hepatitis, related either to the antibiotics she was on during her recent bout of Pneumonia or as part of that overall viral illness. We're awaiting further test results. As sick as she is, she still has a smile on her face even as she appears ready to star in a new version of 'Pinkalicious', as 'Yellowlicious'.

'Daddy, do these look like cowboy boots?'

'Yes, they do a little bit. Are you a cowgirl?' he asked her...

'No, I'm just a regular little girl, wearing red boots', she explained.

The weather has been dark and rainy. It's slowly getting colder. Somehow new rain boots mitigate the gloom, especially if they're red.

Rosie hasn't been feeling well. We noticed over the weekend that she's jaundiced. After a trip to the doctor's office, we're awaiting test results. Would you believe that until a few weeks ago, she hadn't needed to visit the doctor's office once, except for routine check-ups? She's definitely not a fan of the doctor's phlebotomist.

On Monday, the movers arrived at 1211.

Quick as a wink, they emptied the house of its contents. Thirty years worth. My parents, Tom & Sis, had spent months sorting, piling, donating, and pitching goods of all sorts.

What remained, was only the necessities. Unencumbered by knick-knacks and extraneous things, they experienced a new-found feeling of freedom. Downsizing to a house of 'a more manageable' size. Simplified...

Boxes unpacked in the new space. Furniture positioned just right. The view admired through the windows, as brilliant leaves fall.

Thrilled they made the move, after years of planning...

Our little strawberry recovered from her pneumonia just in time. She was one sick little berry.

Rang the bell, smiled, and said 'trick-or-treat', in her quietest little voice. She was a strawberry of the timid variety. All set, after only four or five houses.

So excited November is finally here. It means my favorite holiday is right around the corner.

Have you started your Christmas shopping yet? I've been squirreling a few things away.

If you run in, you'll have to take a peek at the Martha craft aisle...

Next thing you know, you'll feel the need to acquire all of the strawberry related items.

Because, your youngest is doing her best strawberry impersonation for Halloween.

These items will have nothing whatsoever to do with her costume...

You'll spot a pinwheel making kit.

That you didn't know you needed.

And then, you'll spot all kinds of little embellishments.

So sweet, your teeth might start to hurt a little...

The flu hit our house last night. Three of the girls are home from school.

A project was required, once they were feeling a little better and the novelty had worn off.

Paper bead necklaces to the rescue.

According to Ms. Martha Stewart, paper bead making was a popular 'Depression craft'. Paper was scarce at that time, so girls used scraps of wallpaper and pages of catalogues to make their beads.

Cut paper of your choice in advance. Beginning at the end of the wide end, roll paper triangle tightly around a wooden dowel, being careful that edges stay even. When you reach the tip carefully glue down with a dab of craft glue. Slide the dowel out. When you have twelve beads you're ready to string them together in the pattern of your choosing.

The girls were fairly pleased with their results.

Simple + inexpensive = a satisfying project.

The sun is finally shining, and all of my girls are happily going about their day.

Yesterday, we had a few school conferences. They went really well. The highlight, involved the girls bringing Rosie along to meet their various teachers. She spoke a little pidgin French to Madame, drew a few pictures for the art teacher, and brought down the house singing 'Somewhere Over The Rainbow' dancing 'interpretively', accompanied by the chorus teacher on piano. 'Why do we have to go, I was just starting to have fun?' she wanted to know. And here I thought she was shy...

Tonight, we've a fun party to attend. A sweet neighbor of ours in turning ninety. He's amazing. Not only does he walk almost ten miles a day, he still works full time, and is charm personified. I'm certain if life were a race, he'd be the winner.

Emptying a home you've lived in for almost forty years is a fair bit of work.

My parents recently sold their home, and are relocating to a smaller space with a more workable floor plan. Hence, the need to cull and sort.

We're discovering all kinds of forgotten treasures. Some, more exciting than others.

This little cup and saucer planted with vintage glass beaded flowers is marked France on the bottom. Dusty, rumpled and a little bit neglected looking, it was spotted lurking in the corner of her pretty French country china cabinet. She recalls it might've been a baby gift...

My mom isn't really interested in keeping dusty mementos. She's all about moving forward and looking ahead to new adventures. Not being weighed down by possessions. There's definitely something to be said for this philosophy. As somewhat of a magpie, I definitely like collecting certain things. But maybe it's time to realize less is more?

Bob was in the basement, grabbing a few things from the storage room.

A little scratching in the corner, caught his ear...

The cooler temperatures, combined with our location next to 'Open Lands' resulted in a little furry fellow trying to take up residence. A trap laid, and successfully sprung.
The inevitable sad conclusion.

All I can say, is thank heavens my Bob was home.

But, I fear the little guy wasn't flying a solo mission. He must've had friends...

Is organization the key to happiness?

Although, I've no proof of that...

Anecdotal evidence suggests it's a possibility.

A family of six has quite a collection of footwear. As we don't wear shoes in the house, picture the pile. Spotted a vintage plant stand at an estate sale. After a quick coat of paint and the addition of a few locker baskets, the girls sorted through their favorites. We've narrowed the assortment to a chosen few per girl. Flip flops, sadly, were relegated to storage. Next spring, they'll meet again.

Yesterday, we went to the lake. We keep our boat at a marina a few miles from our house. Reports of waves fifteen to twenty feet high? Worth a look, we figured.

Alone, except for a flock of seagulls thoroughly enjoying the surf.

While the waves crash crazily along the breakwall.

Ted Turner once famously referred to Lake Michigan as a 'mill pond'. After being badly beaten and enduring winds up to sixty miles per hour in the sail shredding Chicago to Mackinac Race, he publicly retracted 'anything and everything I ever said about inland sailing'.

Not, a day for boating.

Instead, we admired a fellow visitor to the lake front. She was busy eating her lunch, like it was her last. Rosie, convinced she was Bambi, wanted to know where exactly were Flower and Thumper?

While visitors of a different sort, perched in a lovely spot overlooking the bluff.

What a way to welcome October.

Have you heard of Tereasa Surratt's books, A Very Modest Cottage and Found, Free, & Flea? I just picked them up the other day after discovering her blog. She and her husband were lucky enough to purchase and renovate an old summer camp called Camp Wandewega Lake Resort, in Elkhorn, Wisconsin. Apparently, they hadn't any idea of the treasure trove they'd inherit with the decrepit property. While renovating, they found lots of fun things: dozens of mid-century aprons, untouched boxes of board games, old sporting equipment, and an incredible collection of a hundred-plus pieces of vintage Fiesta Ware that had been hidden inside a wall.

Knowing the power that one mundane object has when grouped with its siblings, her book is an compilation of drop dead darling vintage collections (and how and where to get them). Wool tartan camp blankets, vintage fishing tackle, tablecloths, salt and pepper sets, tin picnic baskets, vintage locker bins, decades-old life preservers, wooden water skis...the list goes on. Loved the section on her hand-crocheted hot pads, and how-to start your own collection.

A Very Modest Cottage, primarily details Tereasa's rescue of a run-down century-old log cabin from her childhood and moving it across two states, from Illinois to Wisconsin. With renovation done on a dime, she fills it with vintage finds and installs it as a guest cottage at her resort on the edge of the woods overlooking the lake.

Both books are quite inspiring to me, I've a long held dream of a little place on the lake up North. One day, it'll happen. Until then, if you care to visit the resort, rental information can be found, here.

A cold and rainy day. Brightened by the fact, we've a winner to announce. Can I tell you how much I enjoyed reading everyone's comments detailing a memory associated with a favorite fragrance? One of mine, involves holidays at my Aunt and Uncle's place in Mazatlán, Mexico. The distinct smell of the ocean, miles of sandy beaches, the cactus we carefully decorated for Christmas, bright sunshine, brilliant blue skies, and the unique fragrance of orange Ban de Soleil.

gosh, fragrance is such a strong memory trigger. i'm always struck by the smell of a closed cabinet that holds jars of spices. the smell that fuses together can sometimes become like a strong version of celery salt and transports me immediately to the warm, sunny kitchen of my nana and popa.

i've never smelled "clean" -- (that sounds funny, doesn't it). it sounds delightful.

Are you familiar with Photogram? I wasn't, until this past weekend. With the absolute proliferation of smart phones, there's no excuse for ever missing a photo op. Photogram, a free app, lets you curate your best photos and drop them into fun templates to share on the web through e-mail or on social networks. (An option to post directly to the various blogging platforms, wouldn't go amiss.) Four photos fit in a template, giving you the chance to construct an instant 'blog post'.

It comes with twenty six templates, and you're able to purchase additional ones from independent artists (who see a share of each sale). It's definitely a perfect app for a busy mom on-the-go. While some of the templates are more appealing than others, there's always the simple option of a solitary color frame.

The site is easy to use, with a clever, 'steampunk' influenced dashboard. Very fitting, if you consider the history and the original meaning of photogram:

'A photogram is a photographic image made without a camera by placing objects directly onto the surface of a photo-sensitive material such as photographic paper and then exposing it to light. Staring out the window, she waits patiently.

The older sisters gone for the day. Counting the minutes until they return. So much to tell.

Up early, she carefully chooses a pretty dress. Next, the accessories. The importance of just the right color hair bow cannot be understated. Dressed to her satisfaction, she literally twitches with excitement. We're off to meet her new teacher and shyly size up potential friends.

The icing on the proverbial cake, a trip to the dance store. Pale pink leather ballet shoes of her very own, for her 'Intro to Ballet' class. A tiny leotard, tights, and diaphanous pink ballet skirt complete the ensemble.

Re-styled miniature work table for Rosie's projects, complete. A spot to ponder, day dream and create. A conference table fit for a pint sized 'big girl'.

Where did August go? For that matter, where did the week go?

Time is moving at the speed of light, my friends...

I've a quick project to share with you. Do you remember the vintage strawberry tole chandelier in my dining room? I've been on the look out for a matching lamp. I finally found one on-line. When it arrived, it was looking more than a little tired.

The lamp was dirty with chipped paint, rust, and a yellowed, frayed cord. With a vintage lamp from the thirties I expected some wear, but this was far more shabby than chic. Not to mention, a fire hazard.

Off I went to buy some white gloss enamel, some paint brushes, a new cord, and fresh felt for the base.

First, I dismantled it, and gave it quite a 'scrub up'.

A careful application of gloss enamel, re-wiring, and it's all good.

Is there anything that a little white paint doesn't improve?

Now, if I could only find the matching strawberry tole sconces...

Trying to get organized, I started packing boxes of things to bring to our local charity thrift. If we haven't used something in more than a year, out it goes. At least, that's the idea. Of course, while at the thrift it's imperative to take a quick scan of the shelves just in case...

That perfect set of Pyrex primary mixing bowls from the 1940's is just languishing on the shelf. Would you believe that's one of those things I always look for but, hadn't ever had the luck to find? At least, not in my price range. Until today.

Spotted a Delphinium Blue Hall dish/planter, a sweet baby blue planter, and a pretty little posy, without a chip. I collect posies, and let's just say finding a vintage one in perfect condition for a dollar, is an infrequent occurrence.

Last, but not least, Cornflower Blue. A while ago, my mother-in-law gave me the two covered dishes, which I use all of the time. We don't have a microwave and they're stellar for reheating all kinds of things in the oven. The coordinating salt & pepper and pitcher/dispenser were serendipitously waiting for me.

I'm thinking I need to get 'organizing' more often.

I'm not a big fan of the classic refrain, 'I'm bored'. Especially, not when you're lucky enough to be on vacation. Give the girls some embroidery floss, colorful buttons, and a healthy supply of felt and they start to get their 'craft on'.

With little to no input from me, they think up all kinds of clever things.

Creativity + colorful materials = happy girls

I find 'back-to-school' time rather bittersweet. I'm glad they're back with their friends learning and laughing, but I miss them. A lot.

On our trip, I was lucky enough to stop in at one of my favorite stores, Viva la Cottage. They had just sourced some vintage books from a retired school teacher. Looking at them, I knew it would be impossible to pick just one. Linen bound editions, from the 1920's with darling hand tinted illustrations. When would I come across the like again?

Carol recognized the girls from birdie blue. She made us an offer we couldn't refuse, and I was delighted to purchase the whole set.

My favorite is, The Turned-Into's, Jane Elizabeth Discovers the Garden Folk, by Elizabeth Gordon.

The book is dedicated to all children who love to work in gardens, and who enjoy the big out-of-doors, and the little friends who live there.

Lyrically illustrated by Janet Laura Scott.

It explains the metamorphosis of various insects in fascinating story form. A tale is told by each tiny insect to a little girl, Jane Elizabeth, in a twee country garden.

The illustrations are so sweet.

As is the story.

I'm reading it aloud to Rosie. It's going to take us a while, to slowly work our way through all of the books. Making them last. Loving every minute.

island love

We're back from the island. Lots of boating, swimming, exploring and cherry pie eating.

I celebrated my birthday, and happily, my parents surprised us with a visit.

Fresh air + sunshine = happy days.

One of our favorite things to do, is visit a state park on another island. Formerly, it was the private property of a turn-of-the-century electric magnate from Chicago. He'd emigrated from Iceland and his wife was homesick, so he bought her an island. The plan was to build a private retreat for his family and friends.

Unfortunately, he passed away prior to construction of his dream resort. The family donated the island to the state, and now everyone can enjoy it's rustic beauty. He managed to build one heck of a stone boathouse, and some beautiful out buildings. They don't allow automobiles, or even bicycles. Only camping, 'old-school style'.

They let us park our boat in the boathouse. It's beautiful.

A resident bird was kind enough to leave us a souvenir.

This is the space above the boat house. It's glorious.

I could live happily in this little stone cottage, at least for a little while. How about you?

road trip readiness

Our family loves a good road trip. We always completely pack up the car the night before...

Up before the sun, we shower, dress, and hop in.

Half the fun, is opening their totes to see what goodies might be included this time.

It's getting harder and harder to surprise them. But, I still try.

I had all four girls in for their annual back-to-school physicals yesterday. 'Am I going to get a shot? How many? How many?' Anticipation, dread, and anxiety in equal measure.

My oldest has been fighting off bronchitis and an ear infection, and I thought she was on the mend. Not so, I discovered. She has walking pneumonia, and hopefully a new round of meds will help her kick it.

My youngest, Rosie, heard me talking on the phone with the doctor's office.

She then proceeded to follow Maggie outside.

She was hot to discuss 'the petunia growing in Maggie's chest....'

Her sympathy knows no bounds.

the problem

The first step, is admitting you have a problem. I do, and I accept it. It's a certain English shop luring me with its addictively sweet home goods. They run an 'end of summer' sale every year. Tempting, oh so tempting. Wait, practice patience.

The new fall items, will be twice as cute. Maybe even three or four times...

You'll wonder why you didn't wait.

This year, I didn't fall for it. I held out. Lots of things I loved sold out. It wasn't meant to be. My girls questioned my resolve. Biding my time, paid off. A few sale items remained, and much of the new line debuted. The day after I placed the order, all the sale items disappeared...poof.

The other night, my brother and his wife invited us for dinner. They just finished phase number two of their stellar garden installation. I took a few pictures, just for you.

Such sweet summer memories.

I absolutely loved reading all of the favorite summer memories everyone was kind enough to share for our recent 'Moda Home's Greatest Thing Since Sliced Bread' Give-Away. So many of you, included special time with Grandmothers and family, focusing on simple things. Important to keep in mind, as the grandest of plans often are fraught with needless complications. tiny swedish cottage

I'm dreaming of a tiny Swedish cottage by the sea...

400 square feet, to be exact.

Everything you need, absolutely diminutive in size.

The cottage is on a darling little island an hour from Stockholm (by boat) called Resarö in the Stockholm Archipelago. With one store on the island, loads of cute cottages, and gardens, it sounds like my idea of heaven.

In just two weeks, we're making our annual trek to an island on the Great Lakes. I dream of buying a small cottage on the shore, splashing lots of white paint all over it, and making it our own. One day, it's going to happen.

Severe heat and humidity rolled into town for the week.

In the house, blinds closed, air conditioning... on.
Cold drink in hand, I decided the July doldrums can only be alleviated with a colorful give-away.

So, I picked up some items from Moda Home's Greatest Thing Since Sliced Bread line just for you...

Including, Nana's Sewing Box. Every sewer needs a sewing box. Why not a cute one, tricked out in a sweet calico and trimmed with rick-rack and buttons?

Next, we have Nana's Crocheted Potholders, fun and functional, my favorite combination. In my opinion, they're a necessity in the kitchen.

Last, but not least, a set of ten reproduction Floral Hankies. Perfect for making a hankie garland, framing in an embroidery hoop, wrapping party favors, or any project you can dream up.

The weekend, at last.

Time to walk in the garden, and assess the flower situation.

Lots of lime green, mixed with a little vibrant pink.

Rainy days, cooler temperatures, yards of mulch, and organic fertilizer add up to blooms galore.

We had a terrible storm on Monday, and many of my neighbors are still without power. Damaging winds downed many giant, century-old oak, maple, and elm trees.

We lost a tall pine. It could've been a lot worse.

It could have damaged more of my hydrangeas. I lost only one.

I'm grateful. Is there anything worse in a garden, than one full of blooms, lying flat as a pancake?

The girls are feeling better, too. Thank you for all of your kind words and thoughts. You're the best.

Being happy doesn't mean that everything is perfect.

It means you've decided to look beyond the imperfections...

An absolutely beautiful day. Barely seventy degrees, with no humidity.

I talked Maggie and Mary Kate into swimming at the pool with Rosie. Gracie was at her golf and tennis camp (and showed up at the pool, with her camp girlfriends.) All four girls, laughing and happily splashing in the pool. While I read my book, sipped an ice cold Diet Coke, and admired their form off the diving board.

Finished Swamplandia, by Karen Russell (well written, quirky, but very sad), and started The Bride's House, by Sandra Dallas (love the vintage Colorado mining town setting).

And then came the stomach flu...

Ah, summer.

yard sale

I gathered items for weeks. Swept the garage, arranged tables, ironed outgrown dresses, displayed vintage rose patterned china, lemon oiled furniture, and organized the vintage Fisher Price. All in the name of a yard sale. The girls sold cans of ice cold lemonade, strawberry pop, ginger ale, cream soda, root beer, and bottles of water.

We had wonderful weather, my parents helped out, and the girls were happily busy. We met some delightful people who purchased lots of items. (Hello, cute family with the darling newborn twins.) No takers on the vintage hand made wooden baby swing. I'm glad, because I really wasn't ready to see it go.

The only downside, little Miss Rosie skipping on the brick driveway, tripped and fell flat on her face. Oh my, it wasn't good. Neither was the odd older man who, pointed his finger right in my face and said in a loud voice, 'it's all your fault, you shouldn't have let her wear those #*!? flip flops.'

I didn't give him a response, as I was rushing Rosie inside to clean up her little chin, nose, knees, and elbows. But I can think of a few things, I would've liked to have said. What would you have said?

All in all, it was a successful weekend. But, it'll be a good long while before I'm ready for another one.

cluckily

Yesterday morning, when Rosie woke up, the first thing she started talking about was the weekend. The parties we went to, the parade we watched, the fun at the fair, the watermelon we ate, and the colorful fireworks. Although, she didn't manage to stay up for said fireworks.

She then proceeded to tell us that cluckily, the Fourth happens every summer.

She was combining, clearly and luckily into a new word. I like that word.

Cluckily, when I stopped in at a vintage store recently, they had some little jadeite flowerpots from Ms. Martha Stewart's former Martha by Mail catalog.

Oh yes, clearly I was lucky... cluckily.

Try using it on your family, and see if they notice. Mary Kate was the only one of mine, who astutely asked 'what on earth does cluckily mean?'

Ahh, sweet June we hardly knew you...

Loved your cooler than average temperatures, combined with lots of lovely precipitation.

The garden loved it too. But, spending the first part of the month traveling, cost me dearly. I missed lots of early spring blooms at their peak- lilacs, bridal wreath, viburnums and white peonies.

I'm just about over it.

Onto July's roses, hydrangeas, astilbe, phlox and daisies.
